Why Leaders Need To Stop Pushing Themselves Too Hard

Most of us believe that in order to succeed, we have to push ourselves to the limit. Working excessively and compulsively has become normality, even to the extent that we brits are considered ‘workaholics’.

Many of us don’t even have the time to consider the toll this is taking on us. Science tells us that overworking is damaging – that pushing yourself too hard comes with serious consequences for your physical and mental health.

Keep yourself and your employees in mind as you read through these early symptoms of work related stress. If they sound familiar, consider finding ways to begin adjusting the ‘norm’ so that everyone within your business can maintain productivity without sacrificing their health and well-being.

Chronic irritability

Cranky behaviour often signals an imbalance within; it’s a sign that things are not right. Is your heavy workload and high expectations creating irritability both at home and work?

The feeling of never doing enough

Do you suffer from guilt that you’re not accomplishing enough? Are you always pushing and pressuring yourself to do more – feeling that you can’t stop to acknowledge and celebrate your achievements? If so, you need to rebalance your work life.

Constantly being switched on

Overworked team members often feel highly pressured to be productive all day and are constantly connected to devices. If any effort to relax, even for one night, fills you with guilt and anxiety, think about how much unnecessary stress you’re subjecting yourself to.

Distancing yourself from your personal life

If you find yourself using work-related reasons as an excuse to not be present with the people who matter most, you’re doing damage that will be very hard to repair. The people and causes in your life need your presence, and you’ll never be able to reclaim the time you lose with them.

Compromising on self-care

If you hardly leave your desk or the coalface, if you’re living on takeaways and junk food, if you can’t remember the last time you had a good night sleep or even took a walk… you are facing a profound toll on your health and well-being. Long-term productivity requires you to keep your body in good working order.

Pushing too hard will harm your physical health, your relationships and also your state of mind. Make it stop, now! Don’t allow yourself to say “I’ll take care of myself after this project is complete” or “I’m only working hard until my promotion comes through.” Begin today to insist that you, and everyone in your organisation, deserves a happy and well-balanced life – take the steps you need to make it happen.

Sacrificing your well-being in the hope of achieving something great is never the answer. To achieve true greatness you need to concentrate on what is important and take action!
